Alberta Wildfire Project
︎︎︎ Between 2001 and 2013 Jim worked in wildfire management in Alberta, Canada, as a helitack crew member, crew leader, division supervisor, and wildfire educator/mentor. This work spanned across Alberta, with additional work across Canada.
His current research project examines the work of seasonally employed wildland firefighters in Alberta, focusing on mental health challenges and the impacts of climate change.
This project started in the spring of 2025 and is ongoing, consisting of qualitative interviews with current and former wildland firefighters.
Assembling a multidisciplinary team, a proposal to develop a wildfire peer support mutual aid project has been submitted, with a proposed start date of spring 2026.
